Personal & Professional History

Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) Health Coaching Certificate, B.S. Environmental Science, Minor in Biology

I have always leaned towards the sciences as my favorite topic of study during school, as well as a love of animals. This led me to study biology at the University of Iowa, but I soon discovered that I preferred the bigger picture such as environmental science and how whole beings interact and affect each other. However, I did not discover my passion until a fated conversation with a friend who explained to me all he was learning regarding food as the medicine for our bodies, and it was as if a light bulb turned on for me. Thus began my journey of, “how can I grow and improve my own health, and how can I share that with others?” I believe that people matter, and that helping others in their wellness goals is an effective way to impact, for the better, all the things that are important to them in life.

Although I originally grew up in Lake Zurich, IL, I stayed in the Iowa City area after graduating from the U of Iowa with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences – the beauty and community in Iowa has grown on me over the years. From then on I received a health coach certification from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In my free time I enjoy walks and time in nature alongside my wonderful wife. I also have an eclectic mix of hobbies and interests ranging from dancing, video games, fiction novels, ultimate frisbee, singing, to calligraphy (just to name a few).

Why I joined the EPIC team and what Functional Medicine means to me

To me, functional medicine means hope. For so long, I (and I am sure most of us out there) thought that certain diseases and conditions were just a fact of life – something we needed to learn to cope and manage if/when we got diagnosed. Now, I look at health and think, “there definitely IS something I/we can do about this!” I joined EPIC because their passion matched my passion – I have a goal in life to spend it investing in people – and I see focusing on people’s health is a way to help them enjoy more what they are passionate about.

Fun facts about me

I was born in Japan and lived there for almost 11 years before moving to the U.S.
